Cultural Affairs to coordinate Main Street Live; Economic Development to help with funding

The Miami Lakes Cultural Affairs Committee voted to coordinate the cultural logistics for Main Street Live and approved a plan to stage the events in May and June, while the town’s Economic Development Committee agreed to pursue funding and sponsorships to keep the series going.

Matthew Casimir, chair of the Economic Development Committee, told the Cultural Affairs meeting that the initiative aims to revive Main Street and bring more foot traffic and business to long-vacant storefronts. “I wanted to bring more life to it because it's been kind of dead on the decline,” Casimir said, describing the motivating goal behind the revived concert series.

Committee members and staff described the current funding situation: Graham Companies committed to fund February, March and April as a short-term sponsor, and those grants cover the initial months. The town staff explained that the grants pay for three months but that continuing the series will require either Cultural Affairs to allocate recurring funds in the next fiscal budget or for Economic Development and local sponsors to underwrite the events.

Organizers said the per-event budget so far has been modest — organizers estimated the average cost of a vendor/staging mix under $3,000 — but the larger line item in the town’s events budget is Concert on the Fairway, which carries roughly $10,500 and cannot be reallocated in the current fiscal year because part of it is reserved for July 4. Staff told the committee that, after reserving July 4 funds, the Cultural Affairs available balance for the rest of the year would be about $9,000 (according to materials shown at the meeting).

The Economic Development Committee offered to front money if Cultural Affairs could not cover May and June; chamber and tenant sponsorships were described as likely, with the Miami Lakes Chamber already committed to some support for an upcoming date. Specific acts named for upcoming dates included Jackson Bond for May 16 and a band led by Michael Mott for June. Local merchants such as Chella’s and PizzaScene said they want to participate with vendor booths to capture event foot traffic.

The formal motion passed at the meeting, as amended, directs the Cultural Affairs Committee to coordinate and plan the cultural aspects (bands, stage placement and related programming) of Main Street Live for May and June; Economic Development will work with tenants and prospective sponsors to provide funding or to front costs as needed. The motion included multiple abstentions during the roll call; the meeting record does not specify individual yes/no votes.

Organizers were asked to prepare a detailed budget proposal for the next fiscal-year budget cycle so Cultural Affairs can consider formally allocating recurring funds. Staff reminded the committee that being an officially town-funded event — with an internal budget line and event confirmation authority — requires a specific appropriation and a proposed line-item budget when committees prepare their fiscal-year requests.

The committee closed discussion by asking organizers to return with a sponsorship plan, a proposed May–June schedule and a projected per-event budget for its May meeting. Economic Development said it would continue coordinating tenant outreach and sponsor recruitment while Cultural Affairs finalizes bands and programming.
