County IT reports phone-savings, cybersecurity exercise results and storage pressure; election-security requirements met

IT said the county recently switched phone providers to Hood Canal and saved about $400 per month while improving service. IT also completed a cybersecurity exercise in January and reported it met or exceeded the requirements described in a pending state election-security bill (staff said Mason County "meets or exceeds all requirements they have in this bill").
The department reported a device-replacement program that will replace 79 computers this year (36 completed so far), an upgrade push from Windows 10 to Windows 11 and an ongoing struggle with storage and backups; IT estimates an upcoming additional storage purchase near $10,000 and urged offices to clean shared drives of records older than retention thresholds to reduce backups and cost.
IT staff also said the website migration and background features remain in progress and that staffing and workload increases mean the department is starting to fall behind on noncritical requests.
No formal county actions were taken; IT asked departments to prioritize records cleanup and submit urgent tickets for time‑sensitive website uploads.
