The Mason County Sheriff's Office briefed the meeting on staffing moves, training and program changes planned for the spring.
Sheriff's office leadership reported promotions (two sergeants and two corporals), a new detective, adjustments in patrol team assignments and a new civil-manager sergeant. Corrections staffing remains a challenge but the office said outsourcing to other jails has declined and only five detainees were being held out of county at the time of the update.
The department described a planned proactive "set" or enforcement team that will use ComStat-style heat maps to target hot spots, traffic enforcement and problem locations. The sheriff's office said the enforcement team will allow dedicated enforcement work that patrol cannot always perform while still handling high-liability calls.
Sheriff's staff also described growth in co-responder mental-health responses (the office reported the county's co-responder program logged a high volume of calls — more raw calls than a nearby larger county) and an expansion grant request to broaden co-responder hours. The department reported the online crime-reporting tool has produced 46 reports so far this year and noted ongoing multi-agency active-shooter and PIT (precision immobilization technique) training.
No formal actions were taken; the sheriff's office will proceed with training and internal staffing changes and continue seeking grant support for co-responder hours.
