Board approves application for state Local Parks and Recreation Fund grant for multiple park projects

The Board of Mayor and Aldermen voted unanimously March 11 to authorize staff to apply for a Local Parks and Recreation Fund (LPRF) grant to finance improvements at Heritage Park and other park sites across Hendersonville.
Director Gilley told aldermen the application covers projects at Drakes Creek, Mallard Point Memorial, Sanders Ferry and Veterans Park, focusing on deferred maintenance and infrastructure needs that the city could not address quickly without outside funding. The city hopes to use the PIP fund for the local cash match if the grant is awarded.
Gilley said design of the previously awarded Heritage Park project is expected to begin within weeks and that a design period of about five to six months is anticipated before construction bidding. He also briefed aldermen on flood damage elsewhere in the park system: the most recent flood generated damage estimates that insurance will not fully cover and the city’s greenway and spectator seating areas suffered notable impacts.
Aldermen voiced support for the application and for continued investment in the parks system. The resolution passed unanimously; staff will submit the application by the April deadline and pursue state support and delegation outreach as appropriate.
