The Board of Mayor and Aldermen unanimously adopted Resolution 2025‑12 on March 11 expressing opposition to state‑level measures that would preempt local land‑use zoning authority.
Alderman Robertson introduced the resolution after committee discussion and told the board that several pieces of state legislation with varying text — some still filed only as caption bills — were under consideration this legislative session. The resolution instructs the mayor and the city’s legislative consultant to oppose proposals that would remove zoning controls from the city and to notify the city’s state representatives and senators of the board’s position.
Aldermen said they want to preserve local discretion on zoning and land‑use decisions, noting that the General Assembly sometimes files “caption” bills that are amended substantially later in committee. Several aldermen asked staff to share any bill text that becomes available so the board can take or refine positions quickly.
The resolution passed unanimously. Aldermen added several members’ names as sponsors on the floor before the final vote.
