Superintendent outlines budget planning steps, student town halls and reading initiative progress

On budget planning, Dr. Vasquez said each department will be asked to “look at a 2% cut” in their budgets as the district seeks dollars for employee raises and examines overspending areas. She said district leadership will bring options to the board for discussion about what to retain and where to find additional dollars during the budget season.
Dr. Vasquez reported that the district’s reading initiative surpassed 21,800,000 minutes logged in under seven weeks. She gave specific participation highlights by board member districts and named several schools that recorded over 70% participation in the most recent week.
No formal board action was taken on the budget at the March 11 meeting; Dr. Vasquez’s comments were presented as informational guidance for upcoming budget deliberations.
