At Workshop No. 2 of Envision Walnut Grove, residents used a visual‑preference exercise to indicate preferred downtown styles and infrastructure, favoring smaller‑scale buildings with ground‑floor retail, neighborhood parks and tree‑lined sidewalks over large parking lots and super‑modern architecture.
The facilitator explained the exercise’s rules and purpose: “You put a green dot on things you like, a red dot on things you hate,” and asked participants to place only one dot per image so the team could interpret preferences. The boards showed a clear pattern: designs that supported walkability, plazas and mixed small businesses received most green dots; very modern facades and large, single‑use parking expanses tended to get red dots.
Architecture and scale: participants rejected very tall or bulky designs for downtown. The facilitator summarized reactions as “No ugly buildings. Super modern architecture may not be appropriate for Walnut Grove.” Residents who favored mixed‑use options nonetheless said they preferred smaller scales — one to two stories of residential over retail — and ownership opportunities such as condominiums rather than large rental apartment blocks.
Public spaces and sustainability: neighborhood parks, plazas, greenways and trails scored highly. Permeable pavers, native landscaping and rain gardens were widely supported as both aesthetic and stormwater solutions, though participants raised accessibility and truck‑traffic concerns for some permeable pavement types. Electric‑vehicle chargers drew mixed reactions; some attendees questioned space in the downtown footprint while others supported future‑proofing infrastructure.
Parking and circulation: participants preferred on‑street parallel or angled parking over expansive surface lots and opposed dominant, multi‑level parking structures that would visually dominate downtown. Attendees discussed golf carts and shared‑space, narrow streets for low‑speed local circulation, while noting safety and state‑highway crossing issues limit where golf carts might operate.
How the results will be used: the facilitator said the preference boards will inform design guidance and the comprehensive plan’s downtown vision.
