Speakers at a public hearing urged the Transportation Committee to rename a section of Dixie Street to Almond Court to honor Evelyn Ullman, a longtime local fundraiser and founding member of Jerusalem House (now Status Home).
Marilyn Phillips, president and CEO of Status Home, described Ullman's role in creating housing for people living with HIV and said Status Home operates multiple facilities and currently serves about 450 people in city programs. Renee Starrett and Abigail Parkes (Center for the Visually Impaired) also spoke in support, detailing Ullman’s fundraising and long service to local nonprofits. Starrett read remarks on behalf of Ullman's daughter and noted Ullman is 92 and currently living in a nursing home; she said Ullman would be humbled to receive the honor.
After the public hearing the committee voted 6-0 to hold the item so it can be routed to neighborhood planning units (NPUs) for review and comment. Councilmembers emphasized the strong support for the renaming but said the procedure requires community review before final approval.
