Council directs DOT to reinstall Petrie Street crosswalk by June 30 amid safety concerns

The Transportation Committee approved a substitute resolution on March 12 asking the mayor and the Atlanta Department of Transportation (Atlanta DOT) to prioritize a Moving Atlanta/Peechtree Safe Streets project and to reinstall a pedestrian crosswalk, signage and visibility measures near 225 Peachtree Street no later than June 30, 2025.
Councilmembers said urgency was necessary after a man died in the crosswalk area; Rebecca Serna of Propel ATL told the committee the removal of the marked crossing had political causes and that the loss was "a sadly predictable result." Councilmembers sponsoring the substitute resolution said the block is a high-demand pedestrian area downtown and must be made safer quickly.
Committee members amended the substitute to add a completion date and additional cosponsors and voted 6-0 to approve the amended substitute. Commissioner Solomon Kavanas of ATL DOT told the committee the department recognized the urgency and would coordinate with property owners, businesses and the downtown CID to identify the most expedient path forward. "Given the tragic events, we understand the urgency around this issue," Kavanas said.
The approved substitute asks DOT to install the crosswalk, signage and other measures by June 30, 2025; DOT staff said they would follow up with the committee on next steps and outreach coordination.
