Veterans services staff reports outreach, repairs and donated equipment to Adams County HHS committee

A veterans services staff member reported that the county’s veterans services office handled dozens of client contacts in February and helped arrange home repairs and donated mobility equipment.
"In February, we saw 49 client appointments, 9 outreach health and welfare checks, 651 phone calls and electronic mails combined," said Veterans services staff. The staff member also said a personal identity verification (PIV) card for accessing VA services was activated on Feb. 19, which improved access to VA resources.
The report said staff moved donated wheelchairs and other mobility equipment to the Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC) for storage, facilitated a bathroom floor replacement in coordination with Ace Hardware for one veteran whose toilet would otherwise have fallen through the floor, and obtained grants through Juneau County to assist a veteran with roof repairs and a road repair grant.
To reduce confusion for walk-in clients, the office plans to install a bright LED scrolling sign in its window showing messages such as "appointment — please call" or "available," and an outdoor tab with the office phone number for use when staff are out of office.
Committee members asked whether federal funding cuts had affected the office. The staff member responded that the veterans services office is a county operation and not federally funded; grants come through the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs (WDVA). The staff member said the office has about $3,200 remaining from ARPA funding, which was extended to March 31, and that those funds could be reclaimed if unspent.
No formal action was taken on the report; the committee accepted the update and moved to the next agenda item.
