Board approves US Sugar PUD rezoning for up to 3.17 million square feet of nonresidential development

Hendry County commissioners voted to approve RZ24 on March 11, a Planned Unit Development rezoning proposed by US Sugar for a parcel at the northeast corner where State Road 80 and US 27 meet. Planning staff described the parcel as currently used for sugarcane and bordering Glades County.
Ryan Alexander, Director of Planning and Community Development, said the PUD allows a maximum of 3,170,000 square feet of nonresidential uses, including roughly 1,020,000 square feet of commercial/office uses (and up to 170 hotel rooms) and about 2,150,000 square feet of industrial uses. The applicant's presentation and staff materials indicate the rezoning is part of the county's long-range planning for commercial and industrial development along the corridor.
Commissioner Raymond Iglesias moved approval; the motion was seconded and carried on individual votes. The approval is for rezoning only; future development orders and construction-plan reviews remain required.
