The Yukon Traffic Commission discussed a painted crosswalk at 10th Street and Yukon Avenue near the city’s alternative school during its March 11, 2025, meeting, after commissioners noted the stripe directs pedestrians into a parking area and there is no adjacent sidewalk.
Commissioner Puckett said the request began with a teacher at the alternative school and that the crossing had been repainted to standard striping. “The teacher from the alternative school had came up asking for, a traffic crossing there at Tenth And Yukon Avenue,” Puckett said during the meeting.
City staff said the crossing was striped although the commission had not intended for it to be stripped in that location. “The street was actually striped, and we didn't intend for that crossing to be striped,” said Adams, staff member. Adams said city engineers are working with the school to identify a solution.
Commissioners and staff noted the painted crosswalk currently terminates at a portion of bare ground and into what functions as a parking lot, and that no sidewalk currently serves the crossing. Staff said engineers are coordinating with school officials to determine what should be done and to implement any required changes.
No formal motion or vote was taken on the item during the meeting. The commission left the marking in place temporarily while staff and the school work on a longer-term fix.
