Gadsden City deploys new in-house paving crew for local roadwork

Gadsden City Mayor Craig Ford said the city has put a municipal paving crew into service to speed street repairs, work the mayor described as a mix of in-house paving and continued bidding for other roads.
"This is 1 of the few cities, I think, in state of Alabama that has a paving crew," Mayor Craig Ford said, crediting City Engineer Heath Williamson for the idea and saying the crew allows the city to pave some streets more quickly than contracting alone.
Ford said the crew is currently working at the Falls area on a service road for employees and will move to North Sixth Street near Cherry Street Park and to Cherry Court. He also said crews have worked on parts of Noccalula (as referenced in the mayor's remarks as the Falls area) and that the paving team will continue to use the competitive bid process for additional work the city cannot handle with its crew.
The mayor described the paving crew as a way to accelerate repairs on roads the city has identified as priorities and said the work aims to support businesses and schools served by the roads in those areas.
