Saint Joseph School District advances 'portrait of a graduate' as part of CSIP update

Doctor Wood presented the Saint Joseph School District's draft "portrait of a graduate," a committee-produced set of graduate attributes the district plans to use as the lens for future updates to its mission, vision and values and for the Comprehensive School Improvement Plan (CSIP).
"This is how we make our mission come to life. It operationalizes our mission," Doctor Wood said, describing the portrait as the tangible outcome the district wants students to show when they graduate.
The project started in August and used a consultant, Cara Vanda, plus internal teams and external partners. Staff said they gathered input from district leadership, building administrators, teachers (at the district's February Engage professional learning sessions), students, families, Missouri Western and Workforce Alliance partners, and family advocates. Mike Fulton, who "is in charge of Success Ready Network," joined earlier outreach for cohort-based statewide work tied to readiness and improvement, staff said.
Doctor Wood outlined a staged approach: a working model and grade-level continuums for each of five graduate attributes, professional learning with teachers to define indicators at every grade level (including preschool), and a digital feedback "container" created with the communications team to collect refinements. Staff said the next specific engagement step is an administrator session on March 12, followed by continued stakeholder feedback and a return update requested by Doctor Edgar at the board's March meeting.
Board members asked how the work ties to the CSIP and to mission/vision updates; Doctor Wood said the portrait will be the lens through which mission, vision and values are revised and embedded districtwide, via signage and professional learning. No formal board action was taken on the portrait at this meeting; staff will bring updates and refinements back in two weeks and at the March board meeting.
The district identified communications staff (Eileen, Ashley Coates, John Morris) and committee members including Stacia Studer and others who contributed to the design. Staff emphasized the next steps: collect feedback on the continuum from teachers, administrators, parents and the business community and refine indicators that describe what the five attributes look like from preschool through high school.
Questions and next steps: Doctor Wood confirmed staff will return with either work-session updates or the March board meeting CSIP update. The presentation materials include linked videos and stakeholder survey results; staff encouraged board members to review the materials and videos ahead of the next meeting.
