Pender County students win 26 top-five Beta Club placements; CTE students and carpentry team lauded

Pender County Schools recognized dozens of students and teachers during the March 11 board meeting for statewide Beta Club and Career and Technical Education achievements.
West Pender Middle School principal Paige Garza told the board that two middle-school teachers—Cassidy Miller and Angel Nelson—were the only middle-school teachers in North Carolina to receive Educator of Excellence awards from Beta. Garza and other principals read a long list of student placements at the state competition in Greensboro: Victoria Wood placed first in on-site drawing; Trinity Lam placed second on the seventh-grade science academic test; and multiple Pender High School students won academic and arts awards. Principal Nick Paquette said the district took 44 students to the state convention and "brought home 26 top 5 placements," earning bids to nationals; he said the district plans to take about 38 students to the national competition in June.
Dominique Bates, director of Career and Technical Education (CTE), and carpentry teacher David Jackson reported on regional trade competitions. Jackson said the carpentry students placed in 24 top-five slots at a regional Pitt County competition where 26 students competed. He described level-2 and level-1 events that required students to build items from prints on a tight time frame and noted Pender students swept several placements, including first through fourth in one category. Jackson thanked administration and families for supporting student travel and hands-on training.
Bates reported more than 600 students participated in district job-shadowing day and praised local businesses and hosts; the district also hosted hands-on CTE competitions that produced internships, apprenticeships and potential employment leads for students.
Board and staff praised teachers and CTE staff for student preparation and success; the superintendent and board members recognized the wins and thanked volunteers and families for supporting student opportunities.
