Council approves $22,500 quote to rehabilitate Well No. 3 after sharp output drop

The Speedway Town Council on March 10 approved a $22,500 quote from National Water Service to rehabilitate Well No. 3 after town staff reported a substantial loss of pumping capacity.
Town Manager Grant Kleinhans explained that Well No. 3, an older well near the water plant on Tenth Street, had suffered a significant drop in output. "This time last year, it was pumping 261 gallons per minute... and just 1 year, it was pumping 50," Kleinhans reported. He said the well's screen is plugged with iron and other material common to groundwater, and National Water Service will pull the pump, clean the well, apply chemical treatment, perform a downhole video inspection and reinstall the pump.
Kleinhans recommended the $22,500 rehabilitation quote and told the council the work is part of routine maintenance to keep the town's wells operating. He emphasized that the work concerns raw untreated water at the wellhead and that treated, potable water is produced through the town's water plant processes.
Counselor Sarah Gardner moved to approve the National Water Service quote; Counselor Sean Harold seconded. The motion passed 3-0.
