City of Newberry approves sale of 5 acres at Rural Collection Center to Alachua County

City staff and commissioners agreed March 10 to sell five acres of city property at the Rural Collection Center to the Alachua County Board of County Commissioners for $35,000 per acre, a $175,000 total purchase price. Mr. Lee, representing city staff, recommended approving a purchase agreement; the commission approved the motion unanimously.
Mr. Lee told the commission the city had earlier pursued an interlocal agreement with the county for joint use of the environmental park and the wastewater plant property, but that work later shifted to a straight purchase request from the county. The city paid $12,500 per acre for the same land in 2021, Lee said, and noted the city will be responsible for bringing utilities to the site as part of the transaction.
Gus Olmos, identified as the county’s solid waste recovery director, told the commission the county’s timeline for building a facility on the site is limited by availability of utilities; once utilities are in place the county expects to proceed with construction.
Commissioner Tim Martin moved to authorize appropriate officials to execute the purchase agreement and related documents; Commissioner Tony Maison seconded. After no public comment, the commission voted "aye" and the motion passed unanimously.
