School staff members at Billy Mitchell Elementary described a second annual Black History Month celebration that included performances, interactive stations and volunteers from community groups.
"Tonight, we are celebrating our soaring legacies for our Black History Month event at Billy Mitchell Elementary," School staff member 1, a school staff member at Billy Mitchell Elementary, said.
The staff member said the event "represents the diversity in our community, and it just provides us that unity in community through collaboration with parents, stakeholders, and our staff." Staff credited parents with shaping the event format. "The way that we break it down with an introduction, performances, and then the interactive stations, that all came from our parents," School staff member 1 said. "They wanted to make sure that the people who attend and our students, that they come and learn something and take something away, from Black History Month. And we partner together to make it come true."
School staff member 2 said the celebration is in its second year: "So we started this event last year. This is our second annual. We have so many partnerships." The staff member also said volunteers from a local mentoring group "come every Thursday to give our students support with leadership skills." The transcript identifies that group as "100 black men of LA." The staff member added that "as MOA comes into our schools, they provide interconnectedness to the arts as well as to all our content areas, and they work with our libraries."
The meeting record does not specify event dates, times, exact activities at each interactive station, or funding sources for the program.
