Board amends nondiscrimination wording to cite Fourteenth Amendment; final adoption postponed

A board member proposed adding language so the policy would read, in part, "the board does not discriminate on the basis of [protected characteristic], in accordance with section 1 of the Fourteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution," and the board approved the amendment by voice vote. The proposer explained the insertion was meant to ensure protections remain in place even if future boards or officials seek to change policy language.
Because district rules do not allow a policy to be adopted at the same meeting in which it is amended, the amended text will return to a subsequent meeting for final passage. The board discussion included supporters who said the amendment preserves constitutional protections and others who expressed a desire to keep the policy language broad and aligned with state and federal law.
