Student advisors: Wakefield High wins district jazz gold; spring sports, prom and senior show upcoming

Student advisors Ahmed Ahmed and Shay Sankta gave the School Committee a roundup of recent student achievements and upcoming events during the March 11 meeting.

Highlights included a Wakefield High School Jazz Ensemble gold medal at the district jazz festival on March 5; the ensemble advances to state finals March 22 at Norwood High School. Administrators and advisors also reported that several winter athletic teams qualified for postseason play, the wrestling team finished second in Division 3, and individual state champions were named in wrestling and girls' brackets.

Upcoming events and logistics Advisors said spring sports begin practices March 17 with competitions starting April 1 (schedules posted on Arbiter Live). The junior prom is scheduled for the upcoming Friday at the Black Swan in Georgetown; the senior show will be held Saturday at 7 p.m. with student and teacher tickets listed at $10 and adult tickets at $20. The district nnual Unity Day at Wakefield Memorial High School is scheduled for March 20, with keynote speaker Jennifer Malone.

Holocaust survivor visit Advisors reported that Wakefield students heard from Helga Melman, a 97-year-old Holocaust survivor, whose talk covered her deportation to the Riga ghetto and experiences in Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen. Committee members later thanked Rabbi Brookoh and high-school administrators for organizing the event; committee members who attended described the presentation as powerful and moving.
