Wakefield Public Schools presents FY26 local budget; personnel, special education and multilingual learners drive increases

Wakefield School Committee members reviewed the Wakefield Public Schools FY26 local budget proposal during their March 11 meeting, hearing administrators say the plan totals roughly $55.4 million and reflects a 5.94% increase over the current local budget. District staff identified personnel costs, out-of-district special-education tuition and related services, transportation and growing multilingual-learner demand as the primary cost drivers.

The proposed local budget includes a $2.6 million increase tied to personnel (a roughly 5.15% rise administrators said is driven largely by settled teacher contract obligations) and assumes continued negotiation or settlement with the district dministration—or six other bargaining units. Staff described the budget outside of salaries as largely level-funded while using one-time reserves and revolving accounts to smooth the transition to the new staffing and program levels.

Why this matters: the committee must hold a public hearing before voting, and the FY26 local appropriation will be presented to Town Meeting in May. The budget affects the tax levy, service levels across Wakefield Public Schools and the district—apacity to maintain newly developed in-district programs for students with high needs.
