Commissioners approve $23,746 change order for annex remediation after asbestos and lead discovered

The Cowlitz County Board of County Commissioners approved a change order with Prestige Northwest Construction Services covering asbestos and lead abatement and related mitigation work at the county annex building.
Kathy Funk Baxter, finance director, told the board the change order totals $23,746.90. She said the original contract was $129,006.48 and the amended contract total will be $153,003.51 after the change order.
Baxter said crews discovered asbestos and lead during mitigation of water damage. County staff said the work includes equipment and material costs needed to restore the annex and allow the Office of Public Defense to occupy the space. Baxter said the county will pursue reimbursement from the responsible party where appropriate but moved forward with repairs to enable occupancy.
A commissioner moved to approve the change order; the motion passed by recorded ayes and the board directed staff to continue efforts to recover reimbursable costs.
