County IT to buy replacement storage appliance to meet growing backup needs

Clay County commissioners on March 11 approved purchase of a replacement electronic storage appliance for county backup systems, with IT staff telling the board the unit will reduce weekend backup windows and accommodate roughly five years of anticipated data growth.
Rory, an IT presenter, said the county's backup processes currently use multiple aging appliances and off-site/cloud tiers. The proposed appliance (Pure Storage quoted through Marco of Fargo) was the lowest of three bids at $118,617; Rory told the board the purchase includes five years of warranty and support. He said tier-1 systems replicate to alternate county locations and to the cloud for archival retention, and that some data (criminal-justice systems) remain on segregated storage due to compliance rules.
Commissioners asked whether body-worn-camera or security-camera growth was driving storage needs; Rory said camera systems are stored on separate cloud services and that the current request covers county servers, document repositories and other application data. Staff said on-premises fast-tier storage allows quicker recovery (minutes) than cloud-only recovery (days) in a disaster scenario.
A motion to approve the purchase from Marco (Pure Storage) for $118,617 passed on a voice vote; IT staff said the item will be funded from internal-service resources already set aside for replacement.
