City staff said the hospital had requested sponsorship of five rooms at $5,000 each and that the Webb Fund currently holds roughly $340,000, with about $50,000 already budgeted for other uses.
Council member Dave, who objected to using Webb Fund money for the campaign, said the fund was established for projects that benefit children and parks and that the medical center is a well-supported 501(c)(3) that may not need the money. "I just can't support that. Webb Fund money is being used for this cause, though, and I won't be voting in favor of it," he said during the discussion. City staff and other council members said the clinic serves the whole community and that a single plaque would signal municipal support without a large outlay.
City staff described the sponsorship as a plaque on the outside of a clinic room bearing the fund’s name and said hospital fundraising has already secured a substantial portion of its campaign goal. Council members who favored a smaller gesture emphasized precedent for occasional non-park uses of the Webb Fund and urged restraint in approving multiple plaques.
The council approved the single $5,000 sponsorship by voice vote; individual roll-call tallies were not recorded in the minutes. Staff said the hospital had requested five $5,000 sponsors but the council chose to approve one as a compromise. The city will proceed with the payment and the hospital will place the donor plaque after standard gift-processing steps.
Council members and staff indicated the Webb Fund’s balance, prior commitments, and customary uses will guide future requests.
