Library hires literacy coordinator as demand for adult tutoring grows

The Carpinteria Community Library on March 10 introduced Stephanie Colburn as its new literacy coordinator and reported plans to expand adult literacy services amid rising local demand.

"We have a growing list of eager learners, and they're waiting for our support," Stephanie Colburn said in both English and Spanish as she outlined the library’s adult literacy work. Colburn told the council the program relies on volunteer tutors and that the library will provide training; bilingual tutors are helpful but not required.

Why it matters: Library staff said adult literacy services help residents apply for jobs, support their children’s schoolwork, and integrate more fully in the community. Council and staff noted the position was funded by an anonymous donation to the Friends of the Library in honor of John and Thelma Schmidhauser.
