Board names new Kissimmee-area campus Cross Prairie K–8

The Osceola County School Board approved the naming of a new Kissimmee-area campus as Cross Prairie K–8, the board heard Thursday.
Renee Burns Leech, a member of the naming committee, told the board the committee considered state statutes and recent district naming conventions, community survey results and the school’s location on Cross Prairie Parkway when selecting options. "We wanted a name that captured the natural beauty of the area of the school," Burns Leech said, and the committee recommended Cross Prairie K–8 to reflect the site and to signal the K–8 model to families.
A board member moved and another seconded the recommendation; the motion carried on a vote called at the meeting. Officials said the K–8 designation was chosen to help parents identify schools structured as combined elementary and middle programs.
The board did not discuss additional conditions for the name on the record; any further administrative steps (signage, school identity and related communications) will be handled by the district’s school-naming and communications staff.
