Board approves personnel, student trips, contracts and program of studies; roundup of votes

Groveport — The Groveport Madison Local Schools Board of Education on March 11 approved a string of routine and programmatic items, including personnel changes, student field trips, a special-education contract amendment, and the high-school program of studies for 2025–26.

Votes at a glance (selected items approved)

- Multiple student trips and activities: The board approved travel and overnight requests including a boys-basketball and cheerleading trip to Wittenberg University (March 4 and March 8), a senior-class trip to Kings Island, a health-services pathway overnight for Ohio HOSA SLC, a track trip to Springfield for regional finals, and others. Several of those were late additions to the agenda because travel dates were imminent; the board discussed adding late items and noted donations and fundraising had covered some student-admission costs.

- Special-education contracts: The board approved an amendment to the district’s agreement with I Am Boundless, Inc., for special-education services as listed in the meeting attachments.

- Payment in lieu of transportation: The board approved offering payment in lieu of transportation for families identified by the transportation department under state law; the initial list of affected families was treated as confidential and attached as an executive-content document.

- Personnel motions: Standard certificated and non-certificated personnel actions were approved as presented in the agenda attachments.

Items postponed or withdrawn

- Diversity training (agenda item F3): The board voted to postpone the diversity training item until the April meeting.

- Open-checkbook item: A motion to adopt an "open checkbook" tool was discussed and then withdrawn so staff could research other districts’ practices (the board was told many neighboring districts had tried this in the past and later stopped because of administrative burdens).

Procedural notes and clarifications: Several board members raised concerns about adding lengthy documents at the last minute and asked that the board return to using a consent agenda (approved by motion later in the meeting) so routine items can be grouped for a single vote unless a member pulls an item for discussion. The board also approved minutes for committee and regular meetings and several other operational items detailed in the packet.
