Union County details landfill, recycling-center services and hours

Union County Solid Waste outlined Tuesday that all county residents may use its landfill and five residential waste and recycling centers, described accepted materials and operating hours, and highlighted recent site improvements and community programs.
The statement said the county’s largest facility, the Union County Landfill at 2125 Austin Chaney Road in Wingate, is open to the public Monday through Saturday and serves both residents and commercial contractors. Union County Solid Waste said the landfill’s residential service area was recently renovated, with a paved driveway, a materials collection plaza for recyclables and an elevated disposal platform, and that the site is now ADA compliant. “If you need assistance, just ask one of our friendly site attendants for help,” the Union County Solid Waste spokesperson said.
County staff said the landfill accepts larger items including mattresses, furniture, construction and demolition waste from home renovation projects, yard waste, tires (off the rim), electronics, scrap metal and large appliances such as refrigerators, washers and dryers. The county also said it manages five residential waste and recycling centers that accept household waste and recyclable materials including paper and cardboard, aluminum and steel cans, glass and plastic bottles, and used motor oil and oil filters.
Officials provided operating hours for the smaller centers as Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Visitors were asked to cover and secure loads before travel to avoid roadside litter. Union County Solid Waste said it sponsors an annual household hazardous waste event to let residents safely dispose of paints, chemicals and other hazardous materials, and that staff work with community volunteers and supply equipment for county litter-cleanup events.
The announcement directed residents to the county website for more information on services and policies, including assistance at the landfill and schedules for the household hazardous waste event. No changes to fees, permitting requirements or funding sources were specified in the statement.
