Moorhead council unanimously approves Christopher Helmick as next police chief, effective April 14, 2025

The Moorhead City Council on March 10 unanimously approved the appointment of Christopher Helmick as Moorhead’s next police chief. Assistant City Manager Mike Reitz presented the city manager’s recommendation and the council voted to confirm the appointment, effective April 14, 2025.
Reitz told the council that Helmick has served in law enforcement with the City of Fargo since 2001, holds the rank of captain and has assignments including criminal investigations, neighborhood services and professional standards. Helmick holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Minnesota State University Moorhead and is a graduate of the FBI National Academy, Reitz said.
Councilmember Ryan Nelson offered congratulations and described broad support for the candidate within the department and community. Helmick addressed the council, saying he was grateful for the appointment and that he looks forward to leading the Moorhead department. “I am really excited to have this privilege to be your chief,” Helmick said. He told the council he has been a Moorhead resident for about 20 years and said he is eager to work with the department and community.
Council members praised outgoing Chief Shannon Monroe for 30 years of service and said they intend to mark Monroe’s tenure before the leadership transition. The council approved the appointment on a unanimous voice vote.
