Yard Crashers program launched; recreation committee advances fireworks and Juneteenth planning

The Community & City Development and Recreation Committee on March 10 approved moving a neighborhood beautification contest called “Yard Crashers” to the council floor and laid groundwork for summer events including a Parades/Juneteenth celebration and a possible fireworks display.

Yard Crashers: Committee member Mary Jo Gaston (committee lead) said volunteers have formed a four-person judging team and she is seeking one more judge; the program would name four winners per 90-day round with certificates and yard signs. Gaston said she will collect quotes for signs and will ask the law director to draft supporting legislation so the program can be funded and placed on a council agenda.

Summer events and fireworks: Committee members reported work on a series of summer events — movie-in-the-park, food trucks and a Juneteenth celebration — and discussed logistics for a fireworks show proposed for the school’s baseball diamond. Committee members said a contractor provided a quote in the range of $19,000–$20,000 for a 30-minute professional fireworks display, and the committee will solicit sponsorships and assign event managers. The committee noted safety planning and coordination with school leadership and the police chief will be required; the recreation manager will lead ongoing organization.

Sports program and rec staffing: Members said they are scheduling a special CCDR meeting on March 31 to update the committee’s events and to seek involvement from the recreation commission and other partners. The committee discussed efforts to recruit coaches and volunteers for youth sports and to coordinate with the school district athletic director.

Next steps: The committee will forward the beautification program and related event proposals to the law director for legislation and will continue outreach to sponsors and partners; a special meeting is tentatively set for March 31 to finalize event roles and timelines.
