Superintendent Dave Ebert briefed the Humboldt County School District Board of Trustees on recent legislative outreach and local recruitment efforts during the Feb. 10 meeting.
Ebert said he and staff attended the Nevada Association of School Superintendents meetings in Carson City where they presented the district’s InVEST recommendations to the state Senate and Assembly education committees. He said the governor’s modified budget proposals are “not favorable to public education,” citing an NDE contact who reported a proposed $2-per-pupil increase in 2026 and $70 in 2027 — amounts Ebert called “grossly inadequate” at current expenditure levels.
He highlighted several bill drafts: Assembly Bill 155 (class-size negotiation changes), AB 156 (salary increase for the Clark County Board of Education) and AB 232 (extending full-year service credit for employees working 900+ hours, benefiting nine-month classified staff). Ebert said he supports AB 232 because it would provide nine-month classified employees with a full year of service credit instead of nine months.
On staffing, Ebert said he and Colby have engaged Carson, Lyon and Great Basin College on a Grow Your Own teacher pipeline; they have meetings scheduled with most local schools and will use those conversations to guide biennial staffing recommendations. Trustees discussed making internships more practicable for paraprofessionals and substitutes pursuing certification and asked staff to investigate compensating internship hours where college rules permit.
Ebert also reminded trustees of upcoming dates: Presidents' Day (school holiday) and a Feb. 28 board meeting in Orovada at 3 p.m. to accommodate student presenters. He encouraged continued advocacy during the legislative session and said he would circulate bill activity to trustees so they can decide whether to agendize items for more discussion.
