Board approves contract for incoming superintendent Colby Corbett at $195,000

HUMBOLDT COUNTY — The Humboldt County School District Board of Trustees unanimously approved an employment contract March 28 for Colby Corbett, who is set to begin as superintendent July 1, 2025.
The contract starts Corbett at a $195,000 annual salary under a four-year rolling term that extends annually if the board affirms satisfactory performance. The agreement includes professional-development and mentoring support for the first two school years; the district may fund up to $30,000 annually for mentoring and related professional growth activities with board approval required for amounts above that cap. The contract also specifies a sick-leave buyout upon severance at the rate used for other bargaining groups: $75 per day.
"The proposed salary is to start Mr. Corbett at a hundred and 95," district counsel noted during the contract presentation. Trustees said the compensation package reflects the responsibilities of the district’s chief executive and aligns with the district’s administrative pay structure.
The contract preserves standard administrative benefits available to other district administrators and clarifies renewal mechanics: unless the board votes to decline, the agreement renews each June for one additional year after annual evaluation.
Board members praised the hiring process and expressed confidence in Corbett. Corbett thanked trustees for their support following the vote.
