District showcases Black History Month activities; high school jazz band performs

Castleberry ISD staff briefed the board on campus activities held across the district to observe Black History Month and introduced a live jazz-band performance by the district high school ensemble.
Kelly James, the district’s social studies coordinator, described elementary- and secondary-level projects that linked classroom work to African American history and the civil rights movement. Staff described research projects, morning-announcement spotlights on notable African Americans, and grade-level connections to topics such as abolition, the Underground Railroad and the civil rights movement.
Wesley McCall, the district assistant director for grades nine through twelve, led the Lion Jazz Band in a set that included “St. Thomas” by Sonny Rollins, “’Round Midnight” by Thelonious Monk and “Moment’s Notice” by John Coltrane. Presenters said the high school jazz band also performed for elementary lunches as part of the district’s outreach.
Board members and staff thanked the coordinators and music directors for planning the month’s activities. The segment was presented as informational and celebratory; no board action was requested or taken.
