Board approves calendar change to move finals before winter break

The Humboldt County School District Board of Trustees voted Feb. 10 to adjust the 2025–2028 school calendar so semester finals occur before winter break rather than after.
Trustee Laurie moved the motion to shift finals to prior to winter break for the '25–'28 calendar cycle; another trustee seconded. The board voted by voice; the motion carried with the chair calling the vote “Aye.”
Superintendent Dave Ebert told trustees the change will create an unbalanced semester length (roughly a 17-week and a 19-week split) for some junior-high electives but that administrators judged the trade-off acceptable because students would not return from a two-week break then be required to take finals. Elementary schedules would be unaffected because they do not run on a semester calendar.
Ebert said he would incorporate the approved adjustment into the published calendars and resubmit them to the state.
