Parks and recreation staff told the Allentown City Parks and Recreation Committee that seasonal hiring is underway, summer events are scheduled, and the department plans outreach on a possible basketball court at Stevens Park.
Miss Tolino, a parks and recreation staff member, said the city’s seasonal recreation, aquatics and playground positions are open on the city website to applicants age 15 and older, with pay starting at $15 per hour. Tolino said the department expects to hire about 60 new workers and has about 60 returning staff members.
Tolino also described two upcoming events: an all‑star weekend for basketball at Executive Education expected to draw “about 500 or so kids and parents” (Saturday 10 a.m.–5 p.m., Sunday 10 a.m.–3 p.m.), and a Philadelphia Eagles Super Bowl celebration at the PPL Center that staff said is sold out.
On park improvements, Tolino said the department is looking to apply for grant funding to install a full basketball court at Stevens Park and that, if the grant is awarded, the city could move quickly. Tolino asked that community members in the Stevens Park area share feedback during the next few workweeks so staff can gauge support.
No formal committee action was taken on the hiring plan, events or the Stevens Park grant application during this meeting. The chair adjourned the session after the updates.
