Senate committees approve study of state highway patrol and speed cameras on major freeways

Senators voted March 10 to pass SCR 23 directing the Department of Transportation and the Department of Law Enforcement to study the possibility of a state highway patrol and the use of speed cameras along major freeways and highways.
Sean Costa, on behalf of the Judiciary, stood on written testimony supporting the study. Robin (representing the Department of Transportation) said HDOT “stands by written submitted testimony in support.” The Department of Law Enforcement also recorded comments in support.
During questions, Director Lambert (Department of Law Enforcement) said DLE would evaluate whether a state force is necessary and how it would operate alongside county police departments, explaining that a state unit could fill enforcement gaps in corridors with high instances of racing or where local resources are limited. No substantive amendments were made in committee; the resolution was passed unamended and will be advanced for further consideration.
