Committee awards 2025 downtown plantings contract to Landsberg after single bid

The Brainerd City Safety and Public Works Committee approved awarding the 2025 downtown plantings contract to Landsberg, the sole bidder for the work that maintains flower pots and downtown plantings.
Public Works staff said Landsberg is a local company and that the bid covers planting and seasonal maintenance. "They've a solid company here in the Brainerd Lakes area," the Public Works Director said. The staff packet showed the city budgeted for about $21,000 for the program this year; staff said the bid came in below that amount but above last year’s contract, representing about a 17.5% increase.
Staff and councilmembers attributed the increase to both higher materials costs and higher wages for seasonal hourly staff. "We had to... bump their hourly rate up to be competitive with the surrounding market... up to $20 an hour," the Public Works Director said, describing efforts to attract seasonal workers for watering and upkeep.
A motion to approve the award was made and seconded; the committee voted in favor and the motion carried. Staff will execute the contract with Landsberg and proceed with downtown plantings for the season.
