Cheshire committee reviews North End GMP, rejects low tiling and roofing bids; no GMP vote

The Town of Cheshire Construction Committee reviewed a revised guaranteed maximum price (GMP) for the new North End School and approved motions to reject several contractor bids, but did not take a final vote on the GMP document.

Laurel, the committee's construction presenter, said the GMP for North end stands at $68,791,561 and described the document's structure, allowances and schedule. The committee reviewed four categories of bid actions (rebid tile work, reject a roofing low bidder, allowances for utilities and other contingency items) and debated a proposed increase in on-site mechanical/electrical coordination staffing that would add roughly $130,000–$140,000 per project.

The committee voted to reject all tiling bids for North End and to rebid that package after determining the apparent low bidder missed sizeable corridor tile work; the low bid of about $548,000 omitted tile in hallways while the next bid was about $703,000, the presenter said, so members preferred to rebid the package rather than award to the second bidder. The motion to reject the tiling bids and rebid passed unanimously.

Separately, members approved motions to reject Young Developers' roofing bids for the North End and for the Norton project. Each roofing rejection was taken as a separate motion, and each passed with one abstention recorded in the roll call for that vote.
