The Arroyo Grande City Council voted on March 11 to approve community service grant awards totaling $75,000, after staff and a volunteer committee reviewed 25 applications that together requested more than $180,000.
Council discussion thanked the grant review committee for its work on a difficult allocation. A council member said there were “tough decisions” given the volume of requests and the limited pool of funds. City Manager Matt Downing and council members noted the committee’s effort in prioritizing awards.
Council member Marbella recused herself from consideration of item 9(i), citing a relationship with one of the nonprofit applicants; the transcript records the recusal as a nonfinancial relationship. The council moved the remaining consent items and then separately considered the grant awards. The motion to approve the grants passed on a roll call with four votes in favor and one recusal.
Council members and staff did not provide a line-item breakdown of the individual grants during the meeting; staff said 25 applications were evaluated and $75,000 was earmarked. Council members said they wished more funds were available but expressed support for the committee’s recommendations.
