Selectmen set public hearing for proposed building permit fee increase

The Board of Selectmen scheduled a public hearing for 6 p.m. Monday, March 24 to receive comments on a proposed increase to the town’s building permit fee. Town staff and selectmen said the proposal would add $1 to the permit fee (the town manager’s budget included an initial $1 proposal and board discussion mentioned a $2 option used for fiscal assumptions).
Town Manager Mark Nelson explained the fees have not changed since 2008 and that staff included comparative fee scales from surrounding towns in the meeting packet. Nelson told the board the $1 or $2 increment was intended to bring the town more in line with peers and to generate modest additional revenue for the operating budget.
Timing: staff recommended an effective date of July 1 to align with the budget year; board members said if the hearing finds opposition the increase could be removed from budget assumptions. “If at the public hearing something came to light and we didn’t approve it, we would have to take it out of our assumptions,” a selectman said during discussion.
The motion to set the public hearing passed by voice vote; all selected answered “aye.”
