Gates Chili cancels UPK lottery after filling seats; superintendent highlights student wins and retirements

GATES CHILI, N.Y. — Gates Chili Central School District officials said the district has enough space to offer Universal Prekindergarten to every applicant this year, canceling a planned live lottery and moving instead to publish a wait list later this week.
"This year, we have received a total of 127 applicants for the 138 available spots, which means they were able to offer every applicant a spot in their preferred program," Superintendent Daley told the board. Because all applicants could be placed, Daley said the district canceled the planned live virtual lottery; the wait list was expected to be posted by the end of the day on Wednesday, March 19.
In other superintendent remarks, Daley congratulated Gates Chili Middle School students who placed first through third in the Monroe County civics competition; first-place winners qualify to advance to a state competition in Albany. He also noted that student Ben Coffey won the state DECA competition and will travel to nationals.
Daley announced personnel changes at the high school and elementary level, thanking Principal Tim Young and Assistant Principal Kevin Whitmore for their combined nearly 60 years in education; both will retire at the end of the school year. Rob Banzer was thanked for guiding Florence Brasser for six weeks, and Daley said Dr. Danny Dean will serve as interim principal at Brasser for the remainder of the year.
The board also received a brief update from the Gates Chili Education Foundation, which asked for new members and announced an April 10 volleyball fundraiser at the high school field house; admission is $2 plus a nonperishable food donation or $5 without a food donation, the foundation representative said.
