Transportation and facilities staff and the district’s transportation committee had previously recommended opening the contract to bids; administrators and the transportation director warned the board that current procurement timing is tight and that many potential providers may be unavailable this spring because of other district commitments.
Several board members and local residents urged competitive bidding as a matter of fiscal responsibility and to protect local drivers, while others stressed the practical constraints of a condensed timeline. During committee discussion, multiple vendors and local contractors were identified as potential bidders; transportation staff noted the district can specify local‑terminal or local‑driver preferences in an RFP to protect community jobs if the board desires.
The board first approved a motion to table the immediate RFP (motion to table made and seconded; recorded tally: 7 yes, 2 no). After that vote, a separate motion carried to empower the administration to negotiate a one‑year extension with the incumbent provider and to schedule and advertise a full RFP early in the next school year targeting contracts for the 2026–27 school year. Board members said the one‑year extension would preserve continuity for the upcoming year while allowing a competitive process with adequate lead time in the fall.
Transportation director Jason August and staff said they will begin extension negotiations if the vendor agrees; if a one‑year extension is not attainable, the administration will return with a contingency plan to preserve pupil transportation for the 2025–26 school year.
