Public works staff update council items, grants and project timelines at Board of Public Works meeting

Brad and other staff said the City Council will consider an amendment to the guaranteed maximum price with C.D. Smith for the new Public Safety (Police and Fire) building at its next meeting. Melissa Curran of Stantec is scheduled to present a planning report Tuesday that Stantec completed in December with a $150,000 grant from the Fund for Lake Michigan.
Staff also said work under a National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) grant is paused pending further information from the foundation; the city has submitted reimbursement requests for work already completed. Separately, staff said the city has an agreement in hand for a $500,000 grant from the bipartisan infrastructure law, administered by NOAA and Wisconsin Coastal Management, and that the grant will be on the council agenda.
Other updates included: a pending pre-construction meeting for the road improvement project that carries a $53,500 DOT reimbursement, lighthouse restoration planning and an intended May 1 groundbreaking tied to a mayoral school event, and a library bid/pre-bid timeline. Water-plant work is advancing (roof work underway) and the city announced staff changes: Kyle Sabe and Chad Rathke have joined the plant staff and Chad has taken a new maintenance-manager role. Dan Buehler, the wastewater treatment plant superintendent, announced he will retire in May and his position is being posted.
Staff answered board questions about the Jackson Street closure and repaving, explaining the current plan is to include Jackson Street with a miscellaneous sanitary sewer improvement on Power Street and bid both in spring; the board was told the street will be temporarily opened with gravel until final paving and that curb work will be spot-replaced unless failing curb requires full reconstruction.
The board did not take formal action on these informational items beyond the previously recorded contract awards earlier in the meeting.
