Partial closure at Kingston library after vehicle hits gable; structural engineer to inspect

Select Board members were told that a vehicle drove over a curb and struck the Kingston Library building on a recent Friday night, causing significant damage to a gable-end structural element. The town has restricted access to the affected portion of the facility and scheduled an insurance adjuster and a structural engineer for further assessment.

At the meeting the town’s on-site inspector (identified in remarks as Pedro) reported that a double stud that helps support a ridge beam was severely damaged and that, because the damage was at a gable end, the structure did not appear to pose an immediate threat to the entire building. The inspector recommended a structural engineer examine the damaged ridge support before any repairs that affect the roof or framing are undertaken. The damaged section of the library is closed to the public but the rest of the building remains open.

Library Director Melissa (identified by first name in the meeting) and the library trustees will work with the town and contractors to determine repair scope and a timeline. The Select Board noted that while ownership questions were raised, the town has responsibility for ensuring the building’s structural safety and that the trustees have oversight authority under state statute; the board said it would coordinate with trustees and the director to select contractors and proceed with repairs.
