County veterans officer reports federal staffing changes, urges monitoring of VA access

On federal matters, he told the board that the VHA had executed limited terminations or layoffs at some locations and that the Minneapolis VA had reported 20 employees laid off as of the meeting. He said officials at some facilities initially indicated broad cuts could come, and that certain categories—physicians who are nonprobationary—were later said not to be subject to layoffs. Greg described ongoing attention to authorization processes for community care and said the county had not, to date, seen degraded access to benefits or care but that processing delays were possible where capacity is reduced.
Board members asked whether any veterans have been denied care because of gender identity. Greg responded that eligibility for VA care is based on service (active duty with an honorable discharge and qualifying priority groups) and said: “A veteran’s a veteran,” adding that he would look into any specific incidents and provide more detail later.
He also discussed known programmatic delays on appeals and CHAMPVA processing and advised caution about overinterpreting early reports. Several supervisors asked him to provide monthly status updates. Greg said he and county association partners will maintain relationships with the Milwaukee regional office and that he expected to brief the board again as developments occur.
No formal board action was required on the report; Greg said the veterans office will follow up on specific access questions and staffing impacts.
