Lake Washington School District recognizes 20 National Board Certified teachers

The Lake Washington School District Board of Directors held a recognition during its Feb. 10 meeting to honor 20 educators who have earned or renewed National Board Certification.
Emily Young, the district's director of professional learning, said the certification "is the highest level of professional certification available in education" and described the process as rigorous, taking "one to five years" and requiring portfolios and videos of teaching.
Numbers and honorees
- The district presented awards to nine first-time National Board Certified Teachers and 11 teachers completing maintenance of certification, for a total of 20 recognized educators.
- Named honorees called out during the presentation included Shannon Fisher (Exceptional Needs Specialist, Early Childhood to Young Adulthood); Jennifer Hahn (mathematics, early adolescence); Yesol Jung (English as a New Language, Early Childhood to Middle Childhood); Deborah Sullivan (Exceptional Needs Specialist, Early Childhood to Young Adulthood); Jillian Stroop (recertifying in literacy/reading-language arts); and Caitlin Vaught (recertifying as a generalist in early childhood).
District context
Presenters thanked the Lake Washington Education Association for hosting a reception and acknowledged district facilitators Julia Vasilioskis and Danielle Lancaster who support National Board candidates. Superintendent Holman and the board offered public appreciation for the teachers' professional learning and commitment to student learning.
