HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — The Huntsville City Schools Board of Education devoted a special work session Feb. 18 to interim security measures for elementary schools, exploring clear backpacks, bag checks and entry-point changes while districtwide weapons-detection systems are ordered and installed.
The discussion, led from the dais by board member Miss Alvarez, came after parents asked for immediate steps pending installation of detectors in elementary schools. “What I have been hearing, from my constituent base … is clear backpacks,” Alvarez said. “Should we have one entrance only …? What about teachers just checking backpacks?”
