Board approves Milton Frank javelin/throws-area contract after bid negotiations

Huntsville City Schools’ board approved a construction contract to build a javelin throwing lane, hammer and discus cage and a shot put area at the Milton Frank complex after staff reported a negotiated reduction to the winning bid.

A facilities presenter told the board the project area covers about two acres and will include concrete walkways around the competition area and judge/spectator access. He described a sealed-bid process and said the original reported low bid came in at $446,242; after negotiations the district accepted a reduced amount of $418,842, a $27,400 decrease. "The bidder was BMW Construction, and their bid came in at $446,242," the presenter said. He later described negotiating with the contractor and said the negotiated total was $418,842.

The presenter also noted Dunlop Contracting did not submit a bid. The construction contract on the table includes a 45-day completion period. The presenter said the architectural work was coordinated by Nolan Van Pearson and that representatives from U.S. Track & Field provided technical guidance on facility requirements.

The superintendent recommended approval of the Milton Frank javelin-area construction contract and the board approved the recommendation by voice vote.
