Senate Finance advances bill extending sunset dates for four state boards

The Senate Finance Committee voted without objection to report Senate CS for Senate Bill 80, which extends the termination (sunset) dates of four state boards.
Senate Bill 80 would extend the sunset dates for the Marijuana Control Board, Board of Massage Therapy, Big Game Commercial Services Board, and the Commission on Aging. Committee staff said the measure backdates the extensions in the earlier bill to June 2024 and extends them again.
Senator Seveah Bieber (staff to Senator Bjorkman) introduced the bill on behalf of the sponsor and summarized the measure. Committee members reviewed three fiscal notes associated with the boards:
- The Board of Massage Therapy and the Big Game Commercial Services Board: combined ongoing costs of approximately $53,000 per year; those costs are included in the governor’s FY 2026 request and continue through the boards’ new sunset dates.
- The Alcohol and Marijuana Control Office (Marijuana Control Board): ongoing costs shown as $2,150,300 and status quo 10 positions; that funding is included in the governor’s FY 2026 request and would continue to the new sunset date.
- The Commission on Aging (Senior and Disability Services): $462,700 in ongoing costs and two existing positions; that amount is included in the governor’s FY 2026 request and would continue through the extended sunset.

Senator Kiel moved the committee report for Senate CS for Senate Bill 80 (work order 34LS0416N) and the accompanying fiscal notes. The motion passed with no objection. The committee indicated intent to send the bill to the next committee of referral.
