The Mentor Exempted Village Board of Education approved multiple consent-agenda items Wednesday, including subscription renewals, photography contracts, personnel recommendations, roofing project bids and a series of tax-complaint resolutions.
Key outcomes included a unanimous approval of a BrainPOP subscription renewal after board discussion about content and community alignment (vote 5-0). The board also approved a Newsela subscription renewal and other supplemental resources on narrow votes: Newsela passed 3-2 after members raised concerns about specific content; McGraw Hill Achieve 3000 literacy renewal and Freckle renewals were both approved on 3-2 votes. Several members asked administration to use newly developed review rubrics and administrative guidelines when vetting materials tied to controversial topics.
The board approved two photography-service agreements (Prelude Photography and Shutterfly/Lifetouch LLC) and other vendor contracts by unanimous votes. It also approved Fairfax Elementary School and Mentor High School roofing project bids that came in about $480,000 under budget. The board recommended and approved the appointment of Teresa Ackerman to the Mentor Public Library board.
Human-resources items — certified personnel recommendations, administrative staff appointments (notably an assistant principal assignment at Memorial) and other personnel matters — were approved, typically by unanimous roll call votes. The board approved consent items B through F (finance items) and moved a number of personnel and human-resources actions on motions carried by 5-0 votes.
In a sequence required by changes to the tax-complaint process, the board voted on more than a dozen separate resolutions to authorize the district to pursue or accept tax-complaint outcomes on commercial parcels; each was approved by roll call, with most passing unanimously.
What’s next: Administration will implement approved renewals and contracts, begin roofing work per the bids, and continue vetting subscription content under the district’s forthcoming rubric. Personnel changes will take effect per the approved recommendations.
